In recent years, the development of new technical opportunities, connected with the constant expansion and upgrading of Internet connections to domestic households and to corporate locations has made a tremendous success possible: video via the Internet – so-called IP-TV (Internet Protocol Television).
Whereas in the early Nineties one could still view the famous coffee machine at Cambridge University on the Internet with a resolution of only 128x128 pixels, the trend towards real-time broadcasting continued initially particularly in the audio field, with live broadcasts by radio stations and sports events, using the facilities of the technological market leader at the time, Real Networks.
The desire to be able to broadcast TV-type contents grew stronger, and this sector was pioneered by the first video clips and shows via external media players, in more or less poor quality. It was only the breakthrough and general acceptance of the Internet by the general public some time later, coupled with the technological development in terms of coding systems and formats that video received the necessary bandwidth and quality, resulting in an explosive development in all kinds of directions:
Be it in the field of user-generated contents such as those on Youtube, the broadcasting of live events such as the football world cup, or embedded videos in advertising contents or on news portals: the Internet without the presence and message of video simply cannot be imagined today.
