Cluster and load balancer: Introduction

The term cluster usually refers to a network or group of several node computers, which will provide a defined service even if individual node computers fail. The concept of cluster solutions is based on a redundancy, as far as is possible, of all parts and components. In theory, one must differentiate between different types of clusters. In our computer centre in Munich we have the following two variants available for your projects:

  • Under Fail-safe security – HA (High Availability) – Active/Passive clusters you will find detailed information on various fail-safe servers systems.
  • In the section on load balancers you will find information on the distribution of loads of applications and server processes.

In practice, both these ideas are frequently offered in combination, in order to provide and guarantee maximum availability.

In this case, the individual concepts are themselves designed in a redundant manner. Thus, a load distribution by the load balancers could be designed in an active/passive HA configuration. An active/active HA configuration would also be useful to provide the most efficient use of the equipment. Whatever you decide with regard to your requirements in terms of load balancing or high availability, contact us, we would be happy to advise you on how to realize your project.
